ULTIMATE OLD SCHOOL CELICA (the making of Joe's Road Race Rocket.)

3/11/07

Ok, I just have to say that on my first shake down for 2007, the CELICA is nimble and did very well. It out handled most cars in my run group including many $35,000+ European sports cars driven by instructors with ease not to mention, the suspension is 30 years old. The tie rods had more that 3/8-inch of play. Yes, that bad and it still handled well.

Now its time to replace all the front suspension parts with new OEM units to eliminate any play and safety issues. Here is what was bought. I will be installing these parts for my first official race on Mar 17/18th 2007 at Fontana international raceway.

PHASE 1: Removal of engine.......The main purpose of this Car/Engine build up is to build an Old School Celica (my favorite) that will be able to compete with the newer generation multi valve 4 cylinder, 200HP+ normally aspirated engines out there. This is the first step of the build up.

PHASE 2: Front suspension and brake mods..........The first thing I did was check the old strut and spindle and see what can be done.

This is what was done to make a coil over and brake braket holder to accept the WILWOOD FORGED caliper.

*****Celica engine*****
Here is what the 20R engine specs are from the factory.
Engine: 2189cc I4 SOHC

Horsepower: 90bhp@ 4800 RPM

Torque: 122lb/ft@2300 rpm

Bore: 3.48 (88.5mm)

Stroke: 3.5 (89mm)

Compression ratio: 8.4:1

At this moment the engine has made 110hp to the wheels on a Dynojet 248C. I will do a negative run soon to see just about how much I am making at the engine. My guess at this moment is 130bhp. An approximate 40bhp gain.

OUR GOAL IS 200bhp so we can play with these new multi-valve engines out there. There is still a lot more that can be done to the engine but at this moment $$$ is the limiting factor.

Here is what I have done so far:

Dual Mikuni 44mm carbs

Isky cams 280 grind (their mildest)

Headers 1.5" tubes into 2.5" collector and 2.5" pipe with Flowmaster muffler

Fully ported and polished head with 22R valves

MDS ignition, MSD crank trigger,

4 K&N filters 1 per throat

Here are pics to see the engine. Simple and uncluttered. Sorry engine bay is a bit rusty/dirty but it is making more horsepower!
